Carbon Markets

Carbon markets have played an important role in advancing the measurement and verification of environmental outcomes associated with well plugging, particularly methane abatement.

These frameworks provide a foundation for quantifying impact in a consistent and credible way, which is a necessary step toward translating environmental outcomes into economic value.

However, carbon markets alone have not yet provided a complete solution for funding well plugging at scale. The opportunity lies in building on this foundation to develop structures that can support broader capital formation.

How Carbon Markets Work

Carbon markets allow organizations, companies, and individuals to offset their emissions by purchasing credits from verified reduction or removal projects.

Each credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) that has been avoided, reduced, or removed from the atmosphere.

Methane abatement projects, like the plugging of high-emitting oil and gas wells, generate some of the highest-impact credits available because methane’s short-term climate potency is more than 80 times that of CO₂.

Methane Abatement Credits

Plugging idle and orphaned wells prevents continuous methane release — an immediate and quantifiable climate benefit.

Each project is monitored, verified, and registered using third-party protocols to ensure accuracy and transparency.

Dry Creek Environmental works with BCarbon, a nonprofit carbon registry and climate research center that emerged from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Guided by a mission to quantify and verify climate benefits through a transparent, science-based approach, BCarbon provides the framework that ensures each methane abatement credit reflects real, measurable impact.

Why It Matters

Methane abatement credits align environmental performance with financial value. By monetizing verified emission reductions, carbon markets unlock new capital to fund well-plugging at scale, turning environmental liabilities into assets that benefit landowners, operators, investors, and the climate.

Our Commitment to Integrity

Dry Creek Environmental supports only high-integrity carbon credits — credits that are measurable, verifiable, and additional.

Our projects adhere to independent third-party verification, public transparency, and permanent methane elimination.

Each credit tells a clear story: where it came from, what it prevented, and how much verified value it delivered.

Get Involved

We invite impact-driven buyers, investors, and partners to participate in scaling methane abatement across America’s oilfield legacy.
